  • The Northeast Asian assessed spot LNG price JKM for last week (12 – 16 January, March delivery) rose to low-USD 10s/MBtu on 16 January from mid-USD 9s/MBtu the previous weekend (9 January, February delivery). JKM rose in the first half of the week on the back of increased spot trading activity by rising European gas prices, reaching USD 10s/MBtu on 13 January for the first time since 9 December, amid heightened concerns over geopolitical tensions surrounding Iran. The price fell back to mid-USD 9s/MBtu due to ample supply on 14 January, but turned upward again on forecasts of colder temperatures in Northeast Asia, ending the week at low-USD 10s/MBtu on 16 January. METI announced on 14 January that Japan’s LNG inventories for power generation as of 11 January stood at 2.28 million tonnes, down 0.01 million tonnes from the previous week.
  • The European gas price TTF (February delivery) for last week (12 – 16 January) rose to USD 12.6/MBtu on 16 January from USD 9.7/MBtu the previous weekend (9 January), marking a sharp increase of nearly USD 3/MBtu over the week. TTF continued to rise on the back of colder weather, reduced wind power generation in Germany, and increased withdrawals from underground gas storage, reaching USD 10.9/MBtu on 14 January. Heightened geopolitical risks surrounding Iran further supported prices, pushing TTF up to USD 11.3/MBtu on 15 January, before it soared to USD 12.6/MBtu on 16 January following short-covering by investment funds, marking the highest level since mid-July. According to AGSI+, the EU-wide underground gas storage was 50.9% on 16 January, down from 55.5% the previous weekend, down 19.1% from the same period last year, and down 21.9% over the five-year average.
  • The U.S. gas price HH (February delivery) for last week (12 – 16 January) fell to USD 3.1/MBtu on 16 January from USD 3.2/MBtu the previous weekend (9 January). HH rose to USD 3.4/MBtu on 13 January on forecasts of colder temperatures in northern regions and expectations of increased storage withdrawals, but fell back to USD 3.1/MBtu on 14 January due to reduced feed gas demand following temporary outages at Corpus Christi and Freeport LNG terminals. Although prices rebounded slightly on 15 January, HH declined again on 16 January amid above-average storage levels. The EIA Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report released on 15 January showed U.S. natural gas inventories as of 9 January at 3,185 Bcf, down 71 Bcf from the previous week, up 1.0% from the same period last year, and 3.4% increase over the five-year average.

Monthly spot LNG prices for delivery to Japan

JOGMEC conducts a survey on spot LNG prices for delivery to Japan with the cooperation of companies that are end-consumers of spot LNG and publishes monthly average spot LNG prices from April 2021.

Survey on LNG Handling Volume by Japanese Companies

JOGMEC conducted a survey on the volume of LNG handled by Japanese companies, including transactions supplied to third countries (“external trade”) with the full cooperation of all 30 companies which handle LNG, and published the results.
